On titanium rings and other romantic gestures
I'll be an honest man and say that I cringe when it comes to your "typical" romantic gestures. The whole romance thing of flowers, chocolates and cards on Valentine's day just leaves me a bit cold. It seems like everyone goes through the motions, there's no true original expression of love by following well the worn paths of orthodox romantic expression.
And I'm sure there are a lot of "closet" romance-hating guys out there too, but of course they'll play along with it all just to keep their partners happy!
For me, romance is a very personal thing. Being romantic should be a unique expression between two people. Normally that comes after some time of the two people knowing each other. An example of such a romantic expression would be to buy your girlfriend something that she mentioned in passing weeks ago that she'd love to have, and lo and behold, you picked up on her comment with a timely gift - e.g. if she said something like "I do love Italian food" and you give her a weekend break in Rome. Another example of a romantic gesture is to take your partner out to a restaurant that has some special meaning to both of you. Again, it's a unique thing.
When it comes to actually buying items for each other, I admit my partner surprised (and very much pleased me) when she bought me titanium ring. I'd heard of titanium rings, tungsten rings and tungsten carbide rings from a friend and mentioned it in passing to my girlfriend, you see - and she'd remembered my comment. I'd said that these were such rings I could see as being a great representation of our relationship: strong, yet light. Our relationship is certainly strong, but we are both very light-hearted and often find an opportunity to crack a joke.
