What is the genesis of a fashion trend?
Once a fashion trend is in full flow, it's ubiquitous - your friends are following it, celebrities are, and it even becomes a routine. But what starts a fashion trend off? I think there are many sources to fashion trends:- Celebrities
- Successful marketing by fashion brands that force a fashion item into existance
- Peer groups
- Style and fashion journalists who make suggestions
Once a trend has been spotted, it's already successful. All it needs is a few comments made in the media and readers will take note and jump on the bandwagon. Be it Legging Jean or pashminas at weddings, a trend needs the oxygen of publicity - either local word of mouth amongst friends and peers, or in the media channels of magazines, TV and the internet.
And then there's counter-fashion to consider. A deliberate attempt to thwart fashion trends and deride and mock those who follow popular fashions. This kind of statement is - in itself - a kind of fashion. Nowadays many people are suspicious of the media foisting onto us articles about particular fashion accessories, and they deliberately eschew such fashion accessories, even if before they may have considered wearing them.
