The Politics of Hair in the Fashion Industry

submitted on 22 June 2023 by fashionlistings.org

The Tangled World of Hair and Power

As a keen observer of the absurdities of life and a veteran of the battles between the haves and the have-nots, I've noticed that the fashion industry has a peculiar obsession with hair. Not the kind on your head, mind you, but rather the kind that seems to sprout from every other part of the human body, like the Amazon rainforest reclaiming abandoned Mayan temples. Now, you might think that hair, like clothing, is a purely personal matter. But you'd be wrong. Dead wrong. Because hair, you see, is a powerful weapon in the never-ending war between the fashion elite and the great unwashed masses.Don't believe me? Then consider the fact that the fashion industry's primary function is to make ordinary people feel bad about themselves. And nothing accomplishes this better than a razor-sharp, follicular divide between the haves (those with perfect hair) and the have-nots (those with, well, anything less than perfect).

Of Coifs and Control

For centuries, hair has been the ultimate status symbol. In ancient Egypt, the rich and powerful wore elaborate wigs made from the hair of their slaves. Fast forward to the 18th century, when European aristocrats sported towering powdered wigs that made them look like they'd been caught in a blizzard. And let's not forget the elaborate, gravity-defying hairdos of the ladies of Versailles, which required an army of hairdressers and enough hairspray to punch a hole in the ozone layer. These days, the fashion industry has done away with powdered wigs in favor of equally absurd hair trends. Consider the mullet, which was all the rage in the 1980s. Business in the front, party in the back, and social ostracism for anyone who dared to sport one after 1990.Or consider the "man bun," which has inexplicably gained popularity among hipsters and celebrities alike. The man bun is the hair equivalent of trying to fit a square peg into a round hole – or, more accurately, trying to fit an entire head of hair into a tiny rubber band. The result is a look that says, "I've given up on life, but at least I'm trendy."

The Hairarchy of Power

Of course, the politics of hair extend far beyond the merely fashionable. Hair has long been a battleground for issues of race, class, and gender. Let's take a trip through history, shall we?
  • For African Americans, hair has always been a source of pride and a symbol of resistance against a society that sought to suppress their culture. From the Afro to the cornrows, each hairstyle carries a powerful message about identity and self-expression.
  • For women, hair has long been a locus of control, with societal expectations dictating everything from length to color. From the "bob" in the 1920s to the "pixie" in the 1960s, each new hairstyle signaled a shift in women's liberation and empowerment.
  • For men, hair has historically been a signifier of virility and power. From the long, flowing locks of Alexander the Great to the hipster beards of today, facial hair is the ultimate macho accessory.
So, what does this all mean for the modern fashionista? Well, for one thing, it means that we should never underestimate the power of hair. It's not just something that grows out of our heads; it's a potent symbol of who we are and where we come from.

The Future of Hair Politics

As the world moves forward and the fashion industry continues to evolve, the politics of hair will no doubt become even more complicated. Will we see a rise in "hair activism," as people use their locks to make political statements? Will hair become the new battleground for issues of race, gender, and class?Only time will tell. But in the meantime, let's all take a moment to appreciate the humble hair follicle – the tiny, unassuming structure that has the power to bring empires to their knees and turn ordinary mortals into fashion royalty. So, the next time you find yourself agonizing over a bad hair day, just remember: you're not just fighting a losing battle against humidity and split ends. You're engaging in a grand, millennia-old tradition of coiffure-based power struggles. And, in the immortal words of a certain follicly-challenged philosopher, "With great power comes great responsibility."
